The legacy of love and passion that existed between Governor Thomas Maitland and Lovina Aponsuwa lives on to this day and beyond, at Mount Lavinia.

Dubbed the ‘people’s king,’ Thomas Maitland, brother of James - eighth Earl of Lauderdale at Thirlestane Castle in Scotland, became the second Governor of Ceylon in 1804 - 1811.

In an insistent beat of its drum, the strict protocols of military life inexorably drew Thomas in a rigid march, battling an all-consuming desire experienced amidst the Colombian jungle.

Lovina Aponsuwa, in contrast, a casteless woman from impoverished Rodiya lines, living in the village of Galkissa in Ceylon, danced to her own beat.

Based on true events, within this historical fiction, one senses the presence of the spirit of Lavinia - as she came to be known, permeating the gentle breezes surrounding the mount. Heightened
exquisitely, romance is in the very breath of the land and the urgings of the sea.

The love between Thomas and Lavinia remains tangible to the romantics amongst us who still feel their distant heartbeat.

Few love stories have traversed both the human narrative and the ages quite like this one. The embodiment of this legend - in all its reality – still resides today, at Mount Lavinia.
